Ditch the typical sightseeing spots and get a feeling of what it’s like to live in Greece’s capital. With its southeastern European charm and an unique old town, you’ll find something to do all year round. Follow this Anti-tourist guide to Athens to discover the countless art exhibitions, cozy cafes, and wide range of activities.
Let’s find answers to the most important questions about traveling to Athens to have the most amazing experience there!

How many days should I save to visit Athens?
Tricky question! You could really spend weeks discovering all the restaurants, monuments, and museums in Athens, museums in Athens, as in many other European cities. However, if you are backpacking or Interrailing and your travel time is limited, three to four days would be enough to see the main sights and most of the anti-tourist spots in Athens. I recommend making Retroverse Hostel your home base.
Now that this is covered, our next question is…
What is Athens known for?
History, democracy, and philosophy—this is what I think about immediately when someone mentions Athens. And just because this is an ‘anti-tourist’ guide doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experience all of that. We just want to make sure you get more out of your trip than only seeing the Acropolis.
Art and history
- Yannis Pappas Studio: With free admission, this is a museum you should definitely check out. Yannis Pappas was an artist who devoted his life to both sculptures and paintings. You can admire the artist’s work in the house he and his family lived in. Athens is known for its sculptures, but this is still an anti-tourist spot.
- Zappeion Hall: Once built for the first modern Olympic Games, it is now a conference hall that you can visit for free. It’s just one of many attractions in the National Garden.
- Alekos Fassianos Museum: Newly opened in 2023, the exhibition space aims to focus on the diverse artistic practice of Alekos Fassianos. A few works depicting Athens life in the 1940s–60s, along with scenes from Greek mythology, are enough to gain an understanding of the experience of growing up in Greece.
Green and relaxed Oasis
- Philopappos Hill is located 150 meters above sea level and is therefore the perfect viewpoint over Athens. I’d recommend going there during sunset. Plus, it’s the anti-tourist alternative to Lycabettus Hill.
- Anafiotika neighborhood: You cannot miss this wonderfully scenic neighborhood in the center of Athens. It feels like you’ve been teleported to a real Greek island.
- Kalamaki Beach: A hidden gem of tranquility: crystal clear water, calm sea, and sandy beaches. What more could you want? Bring homemade sandwiches and freshly squeezed juice to enjoy your beach day right outside the city. Afterward, get ready for a night out. Your vacation can’t get any better.

Aegina Island
Did you know you can take the ferry from Athens to Aegina Island for just 10€? This is a must-do if you’re staying in the capital for longer than a few days. Escape the bustling city and relax, admiring the natural beauty and historic monuments.

Local cafes
- Behold Theman cafe: attracts many young customers. But that’s no surprise. They sell all kinds of coffee and tea, as well as tasty brunch options at affordable prices. You’ll find many vegan options here, and the interior design is to die for.
- Stanis yogurt: is a true classic, and every dairy fan has to try it at least once. It does get busy here for a reason, but if you get there right in the morning or late in the evening, it should be okay. If you can’t decide on what to get, I’d recommend the Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts.
- SOL: trendy vegetarian-vegan coffeeshop-bakery-music place – This is an all-in-one spot, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up. Definitely try their cinnamon bun!
- Motiv: Go here for specialty coffee and little prices, and stay there for their vibes! They have two locations in the city – both are equally good.
- Black Salami Microbakery: Set in a beautiful neighborhood filled with art, local shops, and history. Moreover, they are known for some of the best sourdough pizza, focaccia, and sandwiches in the city.
- Krinos: Get the famous Loukoumades (Greek donuts) from Krinos, which are experts when it comes to making them. This bakery has been around for over 100 years and is loved by locals and everyone that passes by.
Anti-tourist spots and experiences in Athens
- Custom sandals: Athens is full of great sandal makers that are happy to work around your wishes. Your new shoes will not only be extremely comfortable, but they will also be the perfect souvenir to last for years. Just make sure to go there at the beginning of the trip since they usually need a few days to get everything ready.
- Monastiraki flea market: This quirky flea market opens its doors every Sunday. You can find almost everything here, but just strolling around is also a great pastime.
- Braziliana: Looking for a cocktail during the day? I don’t blame you. If you happen to go to the Braziliana bar, make sure to take some pictures in their photo booth inside.
