Here’s our Anti-Tourist Guide to Bilbao so you make the best of it while feeling like a local
Ditch the typical sightseeing spots and get a real sense of what it’s like to live in the de facto capital of the Basque Country. With its industrial charm and skyscraper-filled downtown, Bilbao has something to offer all year round. Even in winter, the sun often shines and temperatures usually stay above 10°C. Follow this Anti-Tourist guide to Bilbao to soak up the city’s laid-back atmosphere while exploring its many cafés, clubs, and nearby beaches.
Let’s answer some of the most important questions about traveling to Bilbao so you can have the best experience possible!

How many days should I plan to visit Bilbao?
Tricky question! You could easily spend weeks discovering all the art exhibitions, churches, and museums in Bilbao— just like in many European cities. However, if you’re backpacking or Interrailing and your travel time is limited, two to three days should be enough to see all the must-visit spots.
Now that we’ve covered that, our next question is…
What are some other great museums and artsy spots besides the Guggenheim Museum?
Pretty much the first thing that pops up when you Google “Bilbao” is the Guggenheim Museum. And sure, I get that, the architecture speaks for itself. Nevertheless, Bilbao has so much more to offer, and this Anti-Tourist Guide will tell you all about it.
Euskal Museoa
Since you’re a guest in the Basque region, it only makes sense to explore its history. There’s no better place to do so than the Euskal Museoa. The museum’s visual design and historical collections help you truly appreciate Basque culture and identity.
Independent Art Galleries in the Ensanche Area
This neighborhood is constantly evolving and so is the art you’ll find there. Wander around its streets, and you’ll stumble upon your personal hidden gems and local galleries showcasing fresh, independent works from emerging artists.
Museo Marítimo Ría de Bilbao
As Bilbao is located by the sea, of course you can expect to find a maritime museum! This one is particularly engaging, with plenty of interactive exhibits that make the maritime heritage and culture of Biskay come alive and stick with you long after your visit.
Azkuna Zentroa
The stunning multi-purpose cultural center, Azkuna Zentroa is worth a visit for its architecture alone. But beyond the design, it’s a space where culture is lived daily through exhibitions, performances, workshops, and events. There’s always something happening here, no matter when you visit.
La Vieja Murals
Especially in and around the La Vieja district, you’ll find vibrant street art created by several different artists, each one of them adding to the artsy flair of the neighbourhood. Every wall, doorway, and alley seems to tell a story. This is the way to head for a relaxed walk and some great photos.
Where do the locals go to grab a drink?
Bar La Campa de los Ingleses
A cozy spot right next to San Mamés Stadium perfect for soaking up the local match-day atmosphere while enjoying some great pintxos. The bonus? You get an amazing view of the stadium’s interior.
La Viña del Ensanche
This traditional Basque bar with a modern twist is loved by locals for its lively atmosphere and excellent food. It’s a must for anyone wanting a true taste of Bilbao’s culinary culture.
Dique 1
Located near the riverside in Zorrotzaurre, this bar is ideal for a relaxed afternoon drink with beautiful views of the estuary. Perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
Zurekin
Another local favorite for pintxos and casual dinners in the city center though it manages to stay authentic and welcoming despite its central location.

What are some nearby anti-tourist destinations to visit while I’m in Bilbao?
Getxo
It only takes about 20 minutes to get there by metro. The views are stunning, featuring the UNESCO-listed Bizkaia Bridge and Playa Ereaga. For something a bit more natural and less crowded, head to Playa Gorrondatxe — it’s even more beautiful and untouched, though slightly trickier to reach.
Gaztelugatxe
Thanks to Game of Thrones, this island has gained worldwide fame. But even if you’re not a fan — or haven’t seen the show at all — it’s absolutely worth the trip. The dramatic coastline, winding stone path, and breathtaking views make it one of the most impressive natural spots in northern Spain.
Bonus tip for anti-tourist spots beyond Bilbao
Stay at La Troupe Granja and have a drink at the bar or join of their daily events. You sure won’t regret it.
