We totally get it! Sometimes you don’t know what to eat and you want some good food without breaking the bank so check out our list of cheap eats in Amsterdam. You’ll find some unquestionably great spots that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
1. Café Loetje ~ Traditional restaurant in Amsterdam
Location: Johannes Vermeerstraat 52, Amsterdam
Opening hours: Everyday from 11:30
Café Loetje has been around since 1977 in Amsterdam. It started as a billiards café, but it transformed into a restaurant after it started serving steak, which became super popular. The Dutch people say that the steaks are still “the best steaks in Amsterdam.” The signature Loetje-steak (€23.50) comes with an authentic gravy, a piece of white bread, and freshly cut fries. Café Loetje might not be the cheapest, but it’s definitely a must-visit if you want to eat something in Amsterdam!
2. De Blauwe Hollander ~ Dutch Cuisine in Amsterdam
Location: Leidsekruisstraat 28, Amsterdam
Opening hours: Everyday 12:00 – 22:30
De Blauwe Hollander, meaning “The Blue Dutchman,” is named after the blue uniforms worn by the Dutch marines sent to Indonesia and Suriname. This restaurant serves traditional Dutch cuisine, and they have a lot of different ‘stamppot’ (€17.50), which is a mix of vegetables, meat, and indeed, mashed potatoes. Besides stamppot do they also serve snert (= pea soup). Choice enough if you don’t know what to eat in Amsterdam.
3. Café de Klos ~ Meat Dishes in Amsterdam
Location: Kerkstraat 41, Amsterdam
Opening hours: Everyday 16:00 – 23:00
This place has been around for over 40 years, and they’re known for their meat dishes. Their grilled spareribs (€23.50) are obviously a hit, as are their steaks and other grilled meats. They don’t take reservations, so it’s first come, first served. Although this system is it worth visiting to eat something in Amsterdam. If you have to wait, you can grab a drink across the street in their café, ‘t Genootschap der Geneugten.
4. Hap Hmm ~ Traditional Dutch restaurant in Amsterdam
Location: 1e Helmersstraat 33, Amsterdam
Opening hours: Mon to Fri 17:00 – 21:15
Hap Hmm has been around for 90 years, since 1935 to be exact. They’re a traditional Dutch restaurant, and their chefs have won a bunch of awards for their individual cooking. They’ve also won awards for their food as a whole, like the “best stamppot in Amsterdam.” And you can enjoy it with some beers brewed at the famous ‘t IJ brewery in Amsterdam.
5. Benny’s Chicken ~ Chicken in Amsterdam
Location: Albert Cuyp Markt, Amsterdam
Opening hours: Mon to Sat 10:00 – 17:00
Benny’s Chicken is the perfect example of a traditional, authentic, but also, family business. They’ve been at the Albert Cuypmarkt since 1938, and hospitality is their main focus. They really want to share their family-like atmosphere with their clients. Their chickens grow up in a friendly environment, which is also one of their main priorities.
