Why Visit Europe in Winter?
While Europe might bring to mind sunny beaches and warm city strolls, it offers incredible experiences in winter too! From witnessing the Northern Lights in Scandinavia, exploring Christmas markets in Central Europe or skiing in the Alps, there’s so much to see and do. However, packing correctly for the season is crucial. Winter weather varies significantly across Europe, and most travel guides focus on summer trips—so we’re here to help you prepare for the colder months!
Winter Weather Basics Across Europe
Europe has several climate zones, each with its own winter characteristics. Packing can be straightforward if you’re staying in one region, but if you’re traveling across multiple areas, you’ll need to prepare for diverse conditions. The key essentials? Warm shoes, a quality coat, and layers!
Central & Eastern Europe
For destinations like Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Serbia, expect temperatures around or below freezing. Plan for layered clothing and choose pieces that are water-repellent or quick-drying—leave heavy wool items at home. Be prepared for occasional rain and wet snow.
Where to Stay: We have many hostels in Germany: Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, Leipzig and Munich! Or, if you want to go as East we have hostels in Warsaw, Belgrade, Salzburg, Prague and Budapest!. If you’re traveling with an Interrail pass, enjoy 10% off at participating locations!
Atlantic Countries
In countries like France, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, winters are milder but often rainy. If you’ve visited these areas in summer, you can bring similar clothing, plus a warm coat and umbrella. A raincoat is also essential, especially in the UK.
Where to Stay: Whether you want a romantic trip to Paris, a crazy adventure in Amsterdam to explore the wonders of Stockholm we have what you are looking for!
The Alps
Planning a skiing holiday? Snow is guaranteed in the Alps, so pack for extreme cold. Consider thermal underwear, a wool hat, scarf, snow-resistant coat and pants. Leave bulky sports gear at home since rentals are readily available at affordable rates.
Where to Stay: Our best recommendation for your adventure in the Alps is the Balmers Hostel in Switzerland. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the Alps while partying 365 days a year!
Mediterranean & Southern Europe
In countries like Italy, southern France, Portugal, Greece or Spain winter is mild. Snow is rare, and you’ll only need a heavy coat in December and January. Rain and wind can make it chilly, so pack a raincoat or umbrella. You’ll likely spend lots of time indoors exploring cultural sites and museums but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Where to Stay: Enjoy a couple hours in a gondola in Venice, a paella in Barcelona or enjoy some actual Atlantic beaches in Portugal. We have over a dozen hostels in Southern Europe!
What to Pack: Essential Items
Packing for a winter trip in Europe is all about balance: keeping warm while staying mobile so here are our top recommendations.
- Space Blanket: Great for emergencies and waiting in cold stations for trains or buses. It’s lightweight and can make a chilly wait much more bearable.
- Leggings or Thermal Underwear: Layering is key. Jeans alone may not keep out the cold, but thermals underneath do the trick! Black leggings even add a stylish touch under ripped jeans or cropped pants.
- Swimsuit: Weird, we know but Europe has fantastic saunas, hot springs, and spas. From Hungary to Switzerland, a swimsuit is a must if you want to relax and escape the cold.
- Spare Shoes: Walking in snow or rain can leave shoes damp and muddy. Bring an extra pair to alternate between and don’t forget plenty of warm socks.
- Cold & Flu Medications: Traveling increases exposure to germs and winter weather can be harsh on your immune system. Packing basic meds can save you an uncomfortable pharmacy visit abroad.
- Lip Balm & Hand Lotion: Cold air dries out skin fast. Keep lip balm and a small hand lotion handy for comfort.
- Waterproof Boots or Shoes: Essential for wet, slushy streets and unexpected downpours. Look for options that are both comfortable for walking and protective against cold and moisture.
What Not to Pack: Avoid These Mistakes
- Ski Gear: Avoid lugging your own ski equipment; rentals are widely available and often more affordable.
- Bulky Towels: Hostels and spas usually provide towels, this will save you some space in your luggage.
- Too Many Clothes: Leave room in your bag—you might pick up trendy new pieces in Paris or Milan.
