Here’s our Anti-Tourist Guide to Valencia to make sure you take the best of it while feeling like a local
Ditch the typical sightseeing spots and get a real sense of what it’s like to live in la Terreta, as the locals lovingly call Valencia. Sure, the beach is stunning (and you should absolutely spend a lazy day there soaking up the sun), but this vibrant city has so much more to offer. Even after you’ve marveled at the futuristic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Valencia still has surprises waiting for you. We’ve handpicked three hidden gems that capture the real essence of the city. Follow this Anti-tourist guide to Valencia to have the best time ever.
Let’s answer some of the most important questions about traveling to Valencia so you can have the best experience possible!
How many days should I plan to visit Valencia?
Tricky question! You could easily spend weeks discovering all the art exhibitions, churches, and museums in Valencia, just like in many European cities. However, if you’re backpacking or Interrailing and your travel time is limited, two to three days should be enough to see all the must-visit spots. Add one extra day if you feel like relaxing on the beach and treating yourself to great food in the evening without having sore feet for once. ;)
I recommend staying at Purple Nest Hostel. It’s perfectly located in the centre of the city and thus allows you to spend your time focusing on the really important things. Now that this is covered, lets finally move on to our three anti-tourist spots of Valencia!

Discover the Spirit of Las Fallas at the Museu Faller de Valencia and become a true anti-tourist
The Fallas Festival has taken place every year since the 18th century in Valencia to honor Saint Joseph. Essentially, it’s a vibrant celebration of the arrival of spring. And although you might not be in the city to experience it firsthand in March, you can still capture a glimpse of its incredible atmosphere.
The centerpiece of the festival, the falla, is a monumental sculpture composed of ninots—caricature-like figures created by local artists that often satirize current social and political issues. But there’s much more to discover than just the main monument. And that’s exactly what awaits you at the Museo Fallero.
Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Las Fallas has left behind a fascinating legacy. The museum preserves more than 80 ninots, posters, and other artifacts that bring the festival’s history to life. Audio guides are available in multiple languages for just €1. Thus it easy (and affordable) to dive deep into Valencia’s past and present culture.
The biggest of the smallest: L’Iber Museo de Los Soldaditos de Plomo
Spread across 15 rooms, this museum’s temporary and permanent exhibitions display over 10,000 pieces and a collection of more than 1.5 million miniatures. This makes it the largest museum in the world dedicated to lead soldiers and historical miniatures.
Marvel at the incredible detail of each scene and embark on a fascinating journey through history; all in miniature form. There’s something universally captivating about seeing reality recreated in tiny, intricate versions. You’ll find yourself just as amazed as visitors of all ages before you.
Even better? Admission is just €5 per person, making it an affordable and unforgettable stop on your Valencia adventure.
A Park Full of Art and Elegance: Jardín de Monforte
This is not your usual park. On the contrary, this 12,000-square-meter haven is filled with art, culture, and botanical beauty. After a long walk admiring the statues, fountains, and pools, make sure to relax and take in all the goddess-like grace of the place.
Dating back to the 1850s, the garden’s neoclassical design tells stories from another century. It’s elegant, aesthetic, and almost fairy-tale-like, yet it contrasts beautifully with the surrounding brutalist buildings. Just when you think you’ve absorbed all its history, your eyes catch another charming detail. The park even features a pond shaped like a water lily. How cool is that?
I highly recommend grabbing your lunch to go (it’s also a great way to save on drinks!) and enjoying it right here in this free-admission park. You won’t regret it.
