The Cheap Eats Classic of Florence: Da sabatino
Location: Via Pisana, 2R, 50143 Firenze FI, Italy
Opening hours: Monday – Friday from 12pm – 2:30pm and 7:15pm – 10pm
Starting off strong with this charming, family-run restaurant that celebrates the rustic flavors of peasant cuisine in San Frediano, Florence’s most beloved neighborhood. The best part? You won’t believe how affordable it is! For just €5, you can enjoy a creamy pasta dish, or for €7, an authentic meat plate. Consequently, it can get pretty busy, and since they don’t take reservations, be prepared to wait in line for a little while. However, this is all part of the experience! While you wait for your food to be ready, let Nonna cook for you and sip on a glass of red wine. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back lunch or a long, leisurely dinner.
The cozy way to end a night: La vecchia bettola
Location: Viale Vasco Pratolini, 3/5/7, 50124 Firenze FI, Italy
Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday from 12pm – 2:30pm and 7:30pm – 10:30pm
This place brings memories to life and is a true local favorite among both young and old visitors. The walls are lined with black-and-white photos that let you imagine what Florence once looked like. The menu changes daily and seasonally, so you can come back night after night and still be excited for what’s next.
It’s a social spot where everyone sits close together at long tables. Hence, the lively atmosphere makes it easy to blend in with the locals and maybe even pick up a few Italian phrases along the way. Expect to pay around €13 for a pasta dish. A price I was more than happy to pay for such delicious food and the fun, friendly vibe. I went for the Pappardelle al Cinghiale, a true Tuscan classic.
Authentic and traditional: La casalinga
Location: Via dei Michelozzi, 9R, 50125 Firenze FI, Italy
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday from 12pm – 2:30pm and 7pm – 10pm
Fresh ingredients and home-cooked meals – what more could you ask for? And if it’s affordable, even better! If that sounds like your kind of place, you should definitely come here. In fact, all of the Chef’s Specials are under €16 and are a safe (and tasty) bet every time.
Wine lovers will get their money’s worth, too. The restaurant offers a fantastic selection ranging from cheap-but-delicious local bottles to more boujee options for when you’re feeling fancy.
Cheap Eats from all over: Mercato Centrale Florence
Location: Piazza del Mercato Centrale, Via dell’Ariento, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy
Opening hours: Every day from 9am – 11pm
Like all major Italian cities, Florence also boasts an incredible market near the central station. Unlike in some other countries, the food here is genuinely high quality and absolutely worth trying. Even from the outside, the classic food hall architecture draws you in and invites you to explore. Once inside, stroll through the vibrant fresh-produce stalls and tempting snack bars until you find something that perfectly satisfies your cravings.
Famous eatery:Sostanza
Location: Via del Porcellana, 25/R, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday from 12:30pm – 2pm and 7:30pm – 9.45pm
This restaurant is famous for its butter-cooked chicken, though honestly, every dish I tried was amazing. The chicken is cooked over an open fire, a sight (and smell!) unlike anything I’ve experienced before. The place hasn’t changed much over the years, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Hence, it’s still as cozy and intimate as ever. Even the handwritten menus add to the charm, creating a simple, genuine, and lovingly authentic atmosphere.
