Ljubljana is a beautiful city famous for its rich culture and history. However, one of the most important aspects of the city is food. In terms of gastronomy, Ljubljana offers a lot – you will find traditional local cuisine as well as a mixture of flavors from other parts of Europe due to the various national minorities living here (mainly from the Balkans). Ljubljana food guide will reveal the top 5 places that serve delicious dishes in Slovenia’s capital.

1. Nebotičnik – beautiful viewpoint and excellent drinks
Nebotičnik is an extremely characteristic point on the map of Ljubljana. This 70-meter-high skyscraper built in 1993 was the tallest building in the Balkans during Yugoslav times. On its top, there is an observation deck with a beautiful view of Ljubljana. Next to the castle hill, this is the second place to admire the panorama of the capital. There is a café on the scenic route, there is also a bar serving great drinks and cocktails, and a more refined restaurant on the floor below. You must visit Nebotičnik because the views are worth it. A coffee or cocktail in such a place is pure pleasure.
2. Sarajevo’84
As you can easily guess from the name, they serve Balkan and Bosnian cuisine. A small place located in the basement of a tenement house right next to the Nebotičnik building is a place that absolutely cannot be missed on the local gastronomic scene. This is a typical Bosnian ćevabdžinica, a place serving ćevapčići – grilled meat in various versions typical of Balkan cuisine. Sarajevo’84 evokes the nostalgic atmosphere of the Bosnian capital. The walls are decorated with various souvenirs and newspaper clippings, creating a unique atmosphere inside. It’s easy to guess that many people of Balkan origin visit here, and they also cook here. And the food itself is simply delicious. The king of the menu is meat of excellent quality, well-prepared and served in such quantities that you can eat enough for the whole day. Grilled sausages, mini kebabs, steaks, burek, kajmak, bean stew, grilled peppers, wonderful Bosnian pancakes.
3. Klobasarna
Speaking about street food, it is worth mentioning a place called Klobasarna, located a few steps from the market itself. They serve here one of the most popular dishes in Slovenia – Kranjska klobasa, which takes its name from the historical region of Kranjska. This product is covered by a protected designation of geographical origin, and the sausage itself must be made of pork with bacon.
4. Nobel Burek
Another street food classic from Ljubljana, the burek. It is a type of stuffed pie usually made of filo pastry with meat, vegetables, or cheese filling. It resembles a multi-layered pancake and is a characteristic snack of Balkan cuisine and Middle Eastern countries in the Mediterranean basin. One of the best places to try burek is Nobel Burek, a few minutes walk from the city center – open 24 hours a day.
5. Gostlina Šestica
Šestica is a gostlina (tavern) style establishment, operating since 1776 – the oldest of its kind in Ljubljana. Here you can eat good, traditional cuisine in its true form. From a selection of local cheeses and cold cuts, through dumplings with mushrooms, pouches with trout and smoked cheese, beef stock with pasta, veal goulash with polenta, tripe, beef steaks, roasted pork, game, local fish and seafood, ending with the traditional gibanica ( Šestica was the first restaurant in Ljubljana to receive a license to produce real Prekmurska gibanica – a layered cake). All in the center of the capital in an atmosphere that ensures intimacy and peace while enjoying very good cuisine. Everything is really delicious! This place is a must-visit.
